Rockingham.

Rockingham, Rockingham, jetstar, jet star, virgin, virgin blue, webjet, webjet australia, flight centre australia, flight centre, flight center, hotels.com, expedia, travelocity, Rockingham

Rockingham, just 45 km south of Perth in Western Australia, is a holiday resort city with about 85,000 residents.

Surprisingly, primarily because unless you know the city you will never have heard of it, Rockingham is the 22nd largest city in the land...

Situated on Mangles Bay and with a rapidly growing population, Rockingham is a great seaside resort.

The safe, sandy beaches and sheltered waters of Cockburn and Warnbro Sounds are ideal for aquatic activities, such as swimming, diving, sailing, boating, windsurfing and, of course, fishing.

Two very friendly Rockingham dolphins. You can even go swimming with the wild dolphins if you take a tour out to the dolphin pods offshore, or do a dolphin watch tour.

The dolphin watch vessel has been designed for you to get as close to the dolphins as possible in comfort and safety (yours and theirs).

It features a viewing platform at the front where the dolphins often swim just beneath your feet.

You can also just relax in the clear sheltered water of the Cockburn Sound or head to nearby Point Peron for some scuba diving should you be so inclined.

Rockingham was one of the earliest settlements in Western Australia and is closely associated with Captain Stirling's first landing on Garden Island in 1827 and the early years of the Swan River Settlement.

It was surveyed in 1847 and was a thriving town in 1897 when Rockingham split from Fremantle and became a town in its own right.

In the early days Rockingham was a busy port for the timber industry, shipping Jarrah and Sandalwood overseas.

During World War II troops were stationed along the coast and Garden Island was used by the army, navy and "Z" Special Unit, sometimes (erroneously) referred to as "Z" Force.

Garden Island has now become the HMAS Stirling, the largest base in the Royal Australian Navy and capable of supporting half the fleet.

Rockingham itself is a popular tourist destination with its beautiful expanses of safe beaches, water sports, and environmental parks.

Rockingham Foreshore. The city fronts onto the sheltered waters of Cockburn Sound while Garden Island, Penguin Island and Seal Island are very close by.

Rockingham is known as "Your Aquatic Playground" and a whole host of water related activities are available in a relaxed holiday atmosphere with fun and excitement for everyone.

The many beautiful offshore islands are added attractions, with their sculpted limestone rocks, little coves and reef areas for diving and snorkelling.

Not all the attractions in Rockingham however involve the seacoast.

Others include horse riding, tenpin bowling, the swimming pool, shopping, cinemas and the many restaurants.

In the nearby areas you'll find many fine wineries, a wildlife park and a water ski park.

There are also many picnic places and barbecue facilities along the foreshore, including Bell and Churchill Parks, which have expansive lawns and shady trees.

Fancy interacting with some of the local wildlife?

Take the ferry out nearby Penguin Island to see the gorgeous fairy penguins close up.

Some of the cutest fairy penguins. Penguin Island is home to about 1200 little penguins, (they used to be called "Fairy Penguins" but that name seems to have offended some of the more "peculiar" members of the community.....),

Penguin feeding and expert commentaries are conducted at 10.30, 12.30 and 2.30 daily.

You can visit the interpretive centre to gain an understanding of the life and times of this beautiful little bird.

The island is also a very important nesting, feeding and roosting site for over 50 species of seabirds and a breeding site for the rare Australian sea lion.

Yes Rockingham is a popular destination offering a wide range of visitor experiences and activities that promises a memorable and unique experience for every visitor..........enjoy,

John.
