My Restaurant Guide.
We all like to eat don’t we? Well I do anyway… So do my family and friends, BUT we like to eat where the food is good and good value for money. If you’re anything like me you hate to be ripped off in a restaurant, especially when you’ve been looking forward to a nice meal with family or a loved one, (or even worse, a prospective loved one….)
Now Australian restaurants are just like any other restaurants in the world, there are some wonderful places to eat, great food, great service, magical ambience and so on. Places where you feel special just by being there. In these eating houses they make you feel that you’re doing them a favour by frequenting their place of business, and so indeed you are. You can find these places in every major city and every small town across the length and breadth of the land BUT (yes another BUT ……). As they say in the movies (?) you’ve got to kiss an awful lot of frogs before you come across a handsome prince or in my case a beautiful princess. You certainly don’t have to pay top dollar to get delicious food served just as you like it but you can waste a lot of time, money and stomach acid on restaurants that don't treat you like a valued guest and food that doesn’t come up to scratch. There are pubs and clubs in every city, small town and village in Oz that will serve you what we call a counter lunch for little more than the cost of a cup or two of coffee. These meals for the most part consist of simple fare, well prepared and good to eat but without the pretensions of some of the big city restaurants. If, you’re looking for something to eat while you’re travelling or you just want a quick bite, give Macca’s a miss and try the local pub, I’ll be very surprised if you’re disappointed. If on the other hand, its 5 star you’re looking for you’ll find it in any city or city suburb across the country. Now here’s another BUT, just because it’s a swanky looking venue with a menu to die for and prices you need to collect you life insurance to pay for doesn’t mean the tucker is worth it. (I really didn’t need to tell you that did I ?) I had a meal with some relatives visiting from England about eighteen months ago in one of Sydney’s more famous seafood restaurants at The Rocks, (that’s the suburb not the name of the restaurant). The bill, for six people came to well over $400.00 just for an entrée and a main meal and quite frankly I was embarrassed by it. In Australia I wouldn’t expect to pay any more than about $250.00 for that and I would honestly expect it to be much better than it was, in fact if it wasn’t for the rellies (that’s relatives for those who don’t speak the language) I would have sent it back and left the place. Now, I can’t tell you which eatery that was for obvious reasons, I can, however, give you the low-down on some of the better places I have eaten over the years.
My wife and I love to eat out and as we travel we like to try different restaurants and cafes. Some of the best, wherever you go, are those that serve locally grown produce. Along the coast you can find the best seafood restaurants you’ve ever visited and I say that regardless of where you come from and what you’ve eaten before. Away from the coast there’s the most delicious locally grown fruit and vegetables, straight from the field to the table. If you’re a bit adventurous you can also try some things you probably haven’t eaten before, things like kangaroo, camel and crocodile meat. Just below you’ll find links to some other pages which will give you the good oil on the best places to eat in the various states and territories, do follow them, try the tucker and then write to me and let me know what you think or if you find somewhere that you think I should include let me know and we’ll update our list of favourites. One last thing here, if you eat out a lot there’s a book you can buy called
“The Entertainment Book”
which costs about $60.00 or so, well worth it because it allows you to get 25% discount almost anywhere you’d want to eat and in some cases offers a “buy one get one free” offer. Not only can you eat at discount prices but you can also get discounts at the movies, theatre, theme parks and so on. As I said, well worth the investment. NOW if you plan to be in any of our major cities or their suburbs and you want to know where to eat without taking any risks regarding the quality of the food or the atmosphere just click on the appropriate link below and you can find a restaurant guide that will tell you all you need to know. I've included just a sampling of my own favourites for your consideration, please feel free to mail me with any comments you may have, I might even publish them.
