Quirky Queensland.
Queenslanders are known for their quirky senses of humour, so it stands to reason that a lot of the tourist attractions in the state would fit their slightly left of centre personality.
From Brisbane apartments that blend modern art and art deco to remote country towns whose claim to fame is a dinosaur skeleton found in the region, Queensland is full of fascinatingly funny and wonderfully weird tourist attractions.
Hughendon.
A dusty Australian country town, so typical that it could have been the set of the Crocodile Dundee films, Hughendon would have faded into the patchwork with so many other Aussie country towns, but for one defining factor, the only Australian dinosaur skeleton was found there.
The seven-metre Muttabutasaurus is on display at the Flinders Discovery Centre, and the townsfolk have even affectionately named him ‘Hughie’.
In addition to the dinosaur bones, the Hughendon Hotel has a round pool table.
Talk about quirky!
The Big Pineapple.
We know the American’s love their over-sized landmarks, but we’ve got a surprisingly large amount of them as well.
While NSW features the Big Banana (in Coffs Harbour), the Big Prawn (in Ballina) and the Big Marino (in Goulburn), the Big Pineapple is Queensland’s tourist crown.
Located in Nambour on the The Sunshine Coast, the Big Pineapple is a family destination that offers a hell of a lot of fun along with a hell of a lot of pineapple related merchandise and food!
Try chocolate-coated pineapple, crystalised pineapple, and of course, pineapple on your hamburger.
Ripley’s Believe it Or Not.
Ripley’s believe it or not is a theme park cum museum in Surfer’s Paradise on the Gold Coast, and is a collection of all that is weird, wacky and wonderful in our world.
It features facts and figures about the strangest, most logic-defying acts that have been performed over history, as well as documenting the strange abilities of some members of the human race…like one woman who can pop her eyeballs out of her head!
Hilton’s Corner.
In Ifracombe, a rural, remote town in Central North Queensland, a man named Hilton Jackson has dedicated his life to collecting things.
What things, you may ask?
Oh, just about anything.
There are bottles and drill bits and old toys and buttons and almost anything you can think of that would seem insignificant and unworthy of collection to anyone else.
It takes a rare mind to spot the value in something that others consider junk, but after years and years of being a quirky curator for his very own museum, Hilton has managed to built an empire and something that is, in its own right, a little slice of history.
Cane Toad Racing.
The pesky amphibian pest that plagues the Northern state rarely brings any joy to Queenslanders, but this one particular pastime is an exception.
In Tambourine on the Gold Coast hinterland, the locals spend each Sunday racing the cane toads they’ve caught from the previous night against one another for money.
They bet on their toad, and whoever wins takes home the kitty.
As for the cane toads, after all their hard work in the race, they’re killed afterwards.
They’re still national pests, after all…
Queensland is a wonderful tourist destination for so many reasons, but in terms of quirky pastimes and attractions, it definitely takes the cake.
A holiday in Queensland will be rewarding in so many ways, so stop dawdling, book that travel insurance,
find a flight and get ready for a wild ride!
