North Stradbroke Island.
Beautiful North Stradbroke Island (Straddie to those of us who know her well) is an appealing combination of rugged coastal landscape, tranquil inland lakes and pristine beaches, all just one hour from Brisbane. One of the world's largest sand islands, it is situated at the southern end of Moreton Bay and has some of the most magnificent scenery found in Queensland. White sandy beaches go on forever fringed by the bluest blue ocean you’ve ever seen, while a system of freshwater lakes in the island's centre provides beautiful picnic and swimming spots.
The three townships, Dunwich, Amity Point and Point Lookout, still have a village atmosphere but offer a range of accommodation to suit all budgets, not to mention a variety of cafés and restaurants. Accommodation on North Stradbroke Island includes camping grounds and backpacker hostels as well as good quality hotels, resorts and holiday houses/units for rental. Just a short detour here: Foreshore campsites are accessible by 4WD vehicles only, so if you decide to camp on the beach, remember a 4WD permit is necessary. Camping permits must be booked and purchased prior to arrival and tent tags must be attached to tents. When camping on the beaches: · Use existing marked camp sites - chose a site where you will not need to dig a trench, flatten vegetation, or break overhanging branches · Do not camp within 50m of streams or waterways · Use the toilet facilities, where provided, but if camping without toilet facilities, bury toilet waste in a 200mm deep hole at least 50m away from waterway or campsite or frontal dunes. Do not empty chemical toilet into the composting toilets at Flinders Beach as this will kill the bacteria within the composting chamber - rendering them inoperative · Take your rubbish with you and dispose of the rubbish or litter at home or at designated waste disposal sites · If fishing, bury fish remains 300mm under the sand and below high water mark · Preferably use fuel stoves If a fire is necessary, always keep it small and, where possible, light fires where vegetation is already cleared and/or, on the site of a previous fire. Do not collect firewood from the beaches or dunes. Always observe fire bans. Extinguish all fires before leaving.
Bookings: All campsites, including foreshore camping, must be booked and paid prior to arrival. You will need to book in advance in peak times such as Christmas, New Year, Easter and school holidays.
