Mandurah, the marine playground of Western Australia, is just a leisurely hour drive south of Perth, the state's capital.

Located in the Peel region, which covers an area of about 5500 square kilometres, Mandurah, with a population of about 50,000, has its own unique characteristics and visitor attractions which make it an ideal spot to spend a few days of your holiday in Western Australia and now, with the new rail link to Perth, this southern city is continuing to grow in popularity as the ideal place for a mini escape from the "big city".

Recently declared Western Australia's fastest growing regional destination, the coastal town of Mandurah has become a vibrant tourist attraction with a multitude of activities and entertainment for you to enjoy whatever time of year you visit.

With so much to see and do in one of Western Australia's most popular leisure regions, your time in Mandurah will be well spent.

One of the great waterfront cafes at Mandurah. Maybe you might like to take a cruise and capture a glimpse of some of the many bottlenose dolphins that live in the local waterways, or perhaps catching a feed of succulent blue swimmer crabs, or wetting a line for some exciting river, estuary or ocean fishing is more your speed.

The town centre of Mandurah is situated around Mandjar Bay and it's foreshore is lined with wonderful parkways, barbeque facilities cafe's, restaurants and a great boardwalk, which is just one of the many other walks available.

During weekends and holiday seasons the Mandurah foreshore is packed solid with visitor's enjoying the beautiful surroundings and watching the dolphins at play.

At night the Foreshore lights up to produce a spectacular display of coloured lights which are reflected on the water.

Yes this once sleeping fishing village has come of age in recent years, evolving into a modern and stylish getaway.

You can still drop a line for crabs in the beautiful waters of the estuary or have a family picnic on its shores, but these days you may be just as likely to be dining in a classy waterside restaurant, imbibing in a wine bar or shopping in a funky fashion boutique.

There are also house-boats to be hired and cruising the quiet rivers and waterways is always a relaxing and very enjoyable way to spend some time.

If dining, theatre-going and art exhibitions on Mandurahs spectacular waterfront are not your style you can step back in time and visit some of the Peel regions' wonderful old buildings and heritage sites, there's plenty of them.

Dolphin Quay at Mandurah. On the reverse side of that coin, the relatively new Dolphin Quay Marina is particularly popular, with waterside restaurants, cafes, markets and shops.

Nearby you’ll find the newly opened Australian Sailing Museum, which incorporates the America’s Cup Museum and a whole host of interactive activities and whilst there is much new about Mandurah, you can still indulge the time-honoured iconic Mandurah traditions, a sunset cruise along the canals, perhaps a round of golf or what about really doing something different and spending a weekend in Mandurah on one of the aforementioned houseboats.

Good stuff.

Perhaps you'd prefer to sip an award-winning vintage at one of the regions boutique wineries or browse in discount, clearance, boutique and specialty shops.

There's something for everyone.

Trek a section of the famous Bibbulmun Track or cycle a leg of the new Munda Biddi Cycle Trail, try your hand at white water rafting, visit a feature garden. Or just relax as you enjoy the Peel Region's extensive smorgasbord of natural delights, a network of inland waterways, rivers, wetlands, lakes, forests, National Parks and sandy ocean beaches.

Yes, the Peel region is a great place to get back to nature.

If you’re not sure where to start when deciding what to do, drop into the new Visitor Welcome Centre at the train station for tips or the Mandurah Visitor Centre near the foreshore.

Hire one of these Mandurah houseboats for a holiday. Here are just a few activities Mandurah has to offer:

• Take a fishing charter for the day and catch some local fish.

• Tee off for 9 or 18 holes in one of the World Class Golf Courses.

• Enjoy all the fun of an old fashioned fair at King Carnival.

• Wander through landscaped gardens of Abingdon Miniature Viilage.

• Cruise the waterways of Peel inlet and Harvey estuary on a tour, hire boat or houseboat equipped with fishing gear.

• View the ancient thrombolites at Lake Clifton within Yalgorup National Park

• Indulge in one of the many wineries.

• Or simply enjoy local fish and chips on the Mandurah Foreshore.

Whatever you decide to do and whenever you decide to visit Mandurah one thing is for sure, you will.......enjoy,

John.
