Hobart restaurants.

With some of the cleanest air and water in the world, a temperate climate and rich soils, Hobart restaurants are always able to offer quality seasonal produce for the discerning diner.

Plump asparagus is ready in November while berries and stone fruits span the summer months.

Autumn is heralded by varieties of mushrooms, quinces, apples and pears difficult to find anywhere else.

Such abundance, along with a thriving aquaculture industry means that Hobart restaurant chefs don’t have to go far to source ingredients for creative menus and truffles, olive oil and game meats are now becoming as justifiably famous as Tasmanian salmon, abalone and cheese.

Wine is also produced all around the state.

Although there are Hobart restaurants in the city centre, the culinary heart of this great city is divided between three distinct precincts.

Salamanca Place and the waterfront are both within easy walking distance of town whereas North Hobart is a little further out.

The sandstone buildings, former shipping warehouses of Salamanca have been restored to maintain their sense of history and they now offer contemporary amenities and accommodate most of the restaurants, cafes and bars in the district.

You get a good cheap meal in the pubs. The Saturday Market has many casual food stalls and inside the sheltered square, a reclaimed quarry with a piazza feel, Machine Laundry Cafe is a popular al fresco spot.

Salamanca's Cafe Bar sizzles and no pub crawl is complete without a visit to Knopwood's or Irish Murphy's for a glass or three of Irish beer.

Again, one of my personal favourites is Mummaluka Bar-B-Que at 89 Salamanca Place, Hobart.

The atmosphere is relaxed and child friendly and they have a set menu, for $29.00 you get a choice from 10 mains plus entrée and dessert.

The Revolving Restaurant is at the top of this tower. It can’t get much better than this.

If you don’t mind going out of town just a little then the Point Revolving Restaurant, in the Wrest Point Hotel and Casino complex at 410 Sandy Bay Road, Sandy Bay is a top class eatery.

Not cheap but definitely worth the money, here’s a little from their own blurb and you can believe every word of it :

” Ascend to the 17th floor of the Wrest Point Tower to discover the best Tasmanian food and wine, prepared with creativity and served with flair.

The outstanding cuisine is only matched by the sensational view – make that ‘views’ – because as you dine, you’ll enjoy the changing 360˚ vistas of city, bridge, river, harbour and mountain as the restaurant revolves.

Ask us about our specially-priced menus – browse the extensive wine list of local, national and international vintages – or just drop in to the Lounge in the Point for a pre-dinner aperitif, a coffee or a late-night cocktail.

Kids menu is also available.”

This magnificent Hobart restaurant definitely takes out “best of breed” in my opinion.

As always you have to book in advance, do it right here.

There are, of course, many more wonderful places to eat throughout the length and breadth of this beautiful country, every major town and every small community will have restaurants and cafés which will serve you with quite delicious food, it’s just a matter of finding them.

If you would like to view a very comprehensive listing of over 4000 restaurants, cafés and pubs
throughout Oz we have it here but please remember, in order not to be disappointed you must
