Hervey Bay.

Hervey Bay is situated on Queensland’s Fraser Coast, approximately 300 kilometres or 3½ hours drive north of Brisbane and a holiday in Hervey Bay is generally considered to be a wonderful experience.

Known as a quiet town made up of five suburbs, Point Vernon, Pialba, Scarness, Torquay and Urangan, all situated along a 10 kilometre stretch of beautiful coastline, Hervey Bay is also the gateway to Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island and, as the locals will readily tell you, it’s the whale watching capital of the world.

Hervey Bay has some beautiful beaches. Blessed with long sandy swimming beaches, relaxing island retreats, abundant marine life and pristine national parks, Hervey Bay and the Fraser Coast region is a relaxing holiday playground.

There is a wealth of recreational pursuits, adventure activities and historic explorations in this coastal paradise to keep you busy for days or even weeks if you’re so inclined.

Hervey Bay has often been called the jewel in Queensland’s crown.

The Fraser Coast region has a wonderful subtropical climate, temperatures range from 14 to 23 degrees Centigrade in winter and 22 to 29 degrees Centigrade in summer, rainfall is generally quite low and there are more fine days than in most other Queensland holiday centres.

There are a number of attractions in and around Hervey Bay for the visitor to enjoy and the many sporting and recreational clubs in the region all welcome guests.

Urangan Boat Harbour is Hervey Bay's meeting point for many different aquatic activities, including the whale watching vessels, passenger ferries, the barge to Fraser Island, and fishing charters.

You can also find restaurants and cafes in this area and Urangan pier is the longest I’ve ever seen, a walk to the end and back is more than just a casual stroll! Urangan pier in Hervey Bay.

The Esplanade takes in the picturesque foreshore and has great walking and cycle paths as well as picnic and play areas, free barbeques, public showers and toilet facilities, a bustling marina and an entry point to the botanical gardens.

While Hervey Bay has one of the fastest growing populations in Australia it is for the whale watching and for access to the world heritage listed Fraser Island that the majority of visitors come.

In recent years, the region has become famous as the playground of the majestic Humpback Whales on their return to the Antarctic.

From August to October, the whales frolic in the warm sheltered waters of the bay, putting on a spectacular display for their admirers.

The Hervey Bay marine park is located in sheltered waters behind Fraser Island, and protected from the major prevailing winds and while most whale watching venues only provide the opportunity to view migrating whales, whale watching in Hervey Bay provides the opportunity to study whales when they are enjoying such activities as mating, calving, breaching, spy hopping and interacting with whale watchers on boats, and the boats of the whale watching fleet in Hervey Bay are second to none.

Many of these boats are purpose built and feature such things as underwater windows and video cameras, underwater microphones, tiered viewing areas and the like, to ensure that everyone has a great day.

Many different types of trip are offered including dawn, half day, full day and sailing which ensures everyone will get what they came for and most of the fleet are fast catamarans ensuring less travelling time and more time spent with the whales.

Celebrating the return of the Humpback Whales each year, Hervey Bay stages a Whale Festival for two weeks in August.

An aquatic carnival, including an illuminated procession of floats, is the highlight of this fun-filled fortnight.

There are plenty of good value hotel rooms available throughout the region at most times of the year although during the whale watching season the influx of tourists can cause shortages of accommodation, so it is wise to book early should you plan to be in Hervey Bay at that time. You can get very close to the Hervey Bay whales.

The styles of accommodation in Hervey Bay are quite varied and include caravan parks, backpacker hostels, motels, holiday units and luxury resorts and the town is now becoming a popular destination for seminars because of the increased facilities in this area and beauty of the locations.

But there is much more to Hervey Bay, with its many attractions centring on its safe and sheltered waters and golden beaches.

Boating and fishing enthusiasts will find estuary, beach, jetty or reef fishing and a variety of water sports including diving, water and jet skiing, wind surfing and snorkelling are also there for you to enjoy.

Fishing from one of Hervey Hay's landmarks, the Urangan Pier, is a popular pastime, and glass bottom boats providing great viewing of the coral reefs.

Dayman Point offers sweeping views of the Great Sandy Strait, family picnic facilities and memorials to early explorers Matthew Flinders and Joseph Dayman, and to the men of "Z" force who trained on Fraser Island for a daring World War II operation in Singapore.

The Korrawinga Monument, dedicated to the Aboriginal people of Hervey Bay and Fraser Island, is a symbol of hope for the future unity of all peoples of the area.

To experience the early settlement of Hervey Bay and Fraser Island, visit the Hervey Bay Historical Museum at Pialba or hire a boat and explore Woody Island National Park, halfway between Urangan and Fraser Island, with its ruined lighthouse and graves.
