Fremantle.

If you’re visiting Western Australia then Fremantle is a place you won’t want to miss.

Fremantle, Freo, Fremantle, Freo, Fremantle, Freo, Fremantle, Freo, Fremantle, Freo, Fremantle, Freo

Located in the southwest corner of Western Australia, Fremantle has the Swan River as it’s Northern boundary and the Indian Ocean on its western side.

This city (Freo to the locals) is Western Australia’s major port, approximately 25 kilometres south of Perth and has long been known as Western Australia’s second city.

Fremantle. In days gone by, when passenger ships were the preferred mode of transport for world travellers, "Freo" was the western gateway to Australia.

Millions of people arrived by ship and many made the area their home.

Jet travel changed the city's prominence as a destination but the port city was revived when it became the centre of world attention during the Australian defence of the America's Cup in 1987.

Fremantle today retains much of its old charm: its situation at the mouth of the Swan River, its picturesque old buildings, its cultural diversity and what the long-time residents still call the “Fremantle feeling”.

This sets it apart from the Western Australian capital, Perth.

The feeling comes upon you when you cross the bridge over the Swan River from the northern suburbs, pass historic Cantonment Hill from the east or meander down the river from Perth in a pleasure boat.

The distinctive nature of a port city and the availability of warehouses made vacant by the modernisation of the port has attracted artists and arts organisations seeking low cost accommodation.

Within easy walking or cycling distance from the city centre visitors can experience contemporary circus, fine crafts, original music and theatre, exciting galleries, museums, bookshops and buskers. Fremantle Maritime Museum. Along with maritime history and extensive architectural conservation, the arts have become a central part of Fremantle life where visitors can discover the past and present.

Fremantle provides a unique opportunity for the visitor to experience and enjoy a range of cultural activities in a relaxed atmosphere.

A browse through the markets or leisurely stop at one of the numerous restaurants will complement your exploration of the arts, making a visit to Fremantle a rich and rewarding experience.

If you want to explore Fremantle city it’s not a bad idea to explore it on foot as you’ll certainly find little gems along the way, street performers, festivals and markets will all just “fall” across your path.

Perhaps you'll even unearth some secrets such as a favourite eatery, fashion boutique or art gallery that you'll try to keep to yourself and treasure, or you may even stumble across some intriguing clues to the city's convict and seafaring past.

Whatever you're interested in, you’re sure to find it in Fremantle.

Fremantle is also a vibrant, diverse city, home to some of the most beautiful heritage buildings, great beaches, delicious seafood and talented artists and designers and is a major tourist attraction for travellers from all parts of the world.

When you visit Fremantle, be sure to see the spectacular WA Maritime Museum, Fremantle Prison, Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour, Cappuccino Strip and browse through the historic Fremantle Markets, then relax and watch the sunset on South beach.

A special feature of Fremantle is its maritime atmosphere and this can be best appreciated on a stroll around the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour.

The old Fremantle Prison. This is a working harbour all year round and you may see fresh seafood being unloaded from the fishing boats ready for export or local dispatch.

There are many waterfront restaurants in Fishing Boat Harbour with spectacular views over the Indian Ocean out to Rottnest Island and beyond.

The atmosphere is similar to San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf, with cuisine catering for all tastes - Italian influences feature heavily, and, of course, the taste of freshly caught and cooked seafood should not be missed.

Fremantle was voted 9th in the Royal Automobile Club’s list of 101 Western Australia top tourist destinations.

As I said right up front, if you’re visiting Western Australia then Fremantle is a place you won’t want to miss.

Enjoy,

John.
