Esperance lies along the southern coast of Western Australia, 721km from Perth and is part of Australia's "Golden Outback". This busy port town has been voted the second best town in Australia after Yamba on the New South Wales north coast and with dazzling white sandy beaches, wonderful national parks and lots of islands to explore it's a holiday makers dream.Yes Esperance is one of Western Australia's natural gems enjoyed by families and nature-lovers alike. The squeaky clean white beaches (yes they really "squeak" when you walk on them) of this "off the beaten track" paradise is so relaxed even the kangaroos sunbathe on the beach. Situated a 1.1/2 hour flight or a 9 hour drive from Perth, it's the ideal location for beach lovers. The town is nestled on the shores of Esperance Bay which contains the many islands which make up the Recherche Archipelago and which can be seen from vantage points around Esperance. The Recherche Archipelago is the setting for over one hundred islands, some of which can be explored on excursions from the mainland. Daily cruises on high speed catamarans depart to Mackenzies Island and Woody Island and during the cruises, if you're lucky you may spot seals, sea eagles and dolphins as well as sea lions, Cape Barren geese and plenty of other wildlife.
Diving around the islands is popular, as is experienced diving to the various shipwrecks in the Bay of Isles including the Lapwing Wreck and the Sanko Harvest Wreck. There is overnight camping available at Woody Island and accommodation is in safari style huts none, however, are developed with full holiday resorts like The Whitsunday Islands. Some of the islands also are home to seals and whales can be spotted when they pass on their annual migration during the Australian Spring (September to November).
There are a number of tourist attractions around Esperance, and plenty of things to do. In the town itself is the interseting Museum Village which hosts a number of historic buildings and other attractions including a gallery and craft shop and the town offers many cafés and restaurants and accommodation in Esperance should never be a problem. Also popular are fishing and diving. Fishing is great around the Esperance Jetty at the northern end of the Esplanade, and fishing charters are available if you'd prefer to go out on a boat.
By far the best way to see Esperance is by 4 wheel drive as the Esperance region has a surprising variety of national parks, to the east are Cape Le Grand and Cape Arid National Parks and to the west are Stokes, Peak Charles , Fitzgerald River and Frank Hann parks. The parks are a mixture of coastal scenery, secluded bays, white beaches, salt lakes and soaring granite peaks. The famous Western Australian wildflowers and fauna produce stunning floral displays especially in the spring and camping is permitted in Fitzgerald River, Cape Le Grand and Stokes Parks. Esperance retains much of the laid back quality of life that Australian country people enjoyed in the 1950s but the town was brought right into modern times in the 1970s when some space junk, part of the Space Programme of the United States of America, landed in the region. That unique piece of world history is housed alongside old farming implements in the Esperance Museum. Today, Esperance survives on wheat, sheep and cattle farming and also tourism, fishing and forestry. The port is exceptionally clean, even by Australian standards, and it's possible to stand down wind of a cargo of grain being loaded with no ill effects. One of the places you must see on your visit to Esperance is the famous Pink Lake, a massive salt lake that appears a lovely pink at certain times. The algae in the lake causes the water to change colour and, depending what time of day you visit and the current water and salinity levels, the water has been known to change from brilliant blues to a candy floss pink. Another "must do" on your visit is to jump in the car and follow the Great Ocean Drive. The rugged Esperance coastline is famous throughout the state for its chameleon-like beauty, sometimes serene in the glimmering sunlight and sometimes raging, the ocean provides picture-perfect views throughout the year. The Great Ocean Drive is a 38 kilometre circular route, first taking you west along the coast where beaches form a string of pearls, each as irresistible as the last.
Take a picnic and make a lazy day of it, or unpack the surfboard and ride some of the best waves in the country. The northern loop of the drive heads past Pink Lake and close by, the Lake Warden Wetlands will delight bird-spotters with thousands of waterbirds on view. You might like to follow a walking trail and look out for wildflowers in spring and be sure to stop off at Rotary Lookout for sweeping views over the town and across to the coastal islands. An invigorating loop walk from the lookout will blow away the cobwebs while if you feel like driving further inland, head for the solitude of Peak Charles National Park's ancient granite peaks. Next time you're in Western Australia visit Esperance, you won't be disappointed, John.
