Adelaide shopping.

If you’re like my wife, Adelaide shopping is something you simply must do when you visit South Australia.

Clothes from Australia's top designers as well as all manner of apparel from many of the leading international rag houses.

If you’re in the market for some souvenirs then you’ll find Adelaide shopping has a wonderful assortment of books, antiques, aboriginal art and crafts and so on, or perhaps you’d prefer one of Adelaide's special opals.

Adelaide is the centre of the world's opal industry and the beautifully coloured opals are often referred to as "fire in the stone".

Inside one of the unique underground houses in Coober Pedy. The opal mines can be found in various South Australian desert towns including Coober Pedy, Andamooka and Mintabie.

Of course South Australia is also internationally famous for its world class wines and the state produces most of Australia's wine.

This means, of course, that while the ladies are in Adelaide shopping there’s something for us blokes to do.

Adelaide is surrounded by an extremely large wine producing region, so you can buy wine readily from any wine bar or bottle shop in and around the city, or alternatively visit the wine cellars yourself.

You'll come across the first wine cellars within only a 15-30 minute drive from the city of Adelaide and many offer tours and tasting. Coopers Ale. It's a good drop, helps to pass the time while the ladies are shopping. Another specialty of the region is Cooper's Ale.

Started in 1862 by Thomas Cooper, Coopers Brewery produces a range of products including Cooper's Sparkling Ale, Cooper's Original Pale Ale and Cooper's Best Extra Stout.

This is seriously good stuff, well worth a taste or three.....

Generally Adelaide shopping hours are Monday to Thursday 9.00am – 5.00pm with late night shopping on Friday until 9.00pm.

Most Adelaide shops are open all day Saturday from 9.00am until 5.00pm and Sunday from 11.00am until 4.00pm.

Rundle Mall is where most of the major Adelaide shopping can be found.

Rundle Mall is in the city centre and is Adelaide's largest shopping precinct, with more than 500 retail outlets in 13 arcades.

You'll get a decent lunch at any of the cafes around here. This is where you’ll find all the international and national flagship stores and boutiques, local institutions and specialty shops, cafes, elegant arcades, buskers, flowers stalls and lots of art.

Rundle Mall runs west to east between King William Street and Pulteney Street, and is located one major street south from North Terrace.

To the east, Rundle Mall becomes Rundle Street, with its reputation as a groovy dining and entertainment strip and quirky fashion shops nestled beside smart homewares, good bookshops and camping outfitters.

To the west, Hindley Street has much loved bookshops and new fashion tucked among cafés and bars..

For high quality contemporary craft and design head to the Jam Factory, a collection of modern art and craft studios and workshops at 19 Morphett Street.

Like most Adelaide shopping, The Jam Factory opens Monday to Friday from 9.00am until 5.30pm and Saturdays from 10.00am until 4.00pm

A tram on Jetty Road. It’s closed on Sundays and public holidays.

Beach side, always busy Jetty Road at Glenelg is a good excuse to mix Adelaide shopping with a beachside stroll.

It’s a kilometre-long Adelaide shopping strip offering something for everyone with more than 350 specialty shops, as well as plenty of restaurants, cafes and entertainment.

During the summer months (October to May) Moseley Square, opposite the beach, is home to one of Adelaide shopping's most popular outdoor markets, every weekend and public holiday from 9.00am-5.00pm.

Nearby Harbour Town is a direct outlet Adelaide shopping centre with more than 50 designer fashion and homewares outlets.

Shops and boutiques selling direct to the public with regular retail prices cut by up to 60 per cent make it well worth the visit.

You’ll find signature brands including Polo, Ralph Lauren, Esprit, Oroton, Fletcher Jones, Just Jeans, Rivers, Authentics – Converse, Calvin Klein, Table Eight Clearance and Shoe Factory – Florsheim and Mollini to name just a few.

Harbour Town is just 15 minutes from Adelaide and 10 minutes from Glenelg on Tapleys Hill Road, West Beach.

Catch the historic Glenelg Tram from Victoria Square in the city and then transfer to Harbour Town by catching Bus 340 or 345 from Moseley Street.

If it’s antiques you’re after then head to Adelaide shopping's Antique Market in Grote Street where you’ll find 36 of Adelaide shopping's leading antiques and collectables dealers in a 10,000 square foot showroom.

The entrance to the magnificent Adelaide Arcade. In the market you’ll also find Adelaide Vintage Toys and Collectables which has a display of vintage toys particularly from the 1950s and 1960s.

When the stunning Adelaide Shopping Arcade was built in 1885 it housed 50 shops, now it has over 100 between two levels yet, it still maintains its impressive classic Victorian architecture.

Adelaide Arcade can be found right in the heart of Adelaide between Rundle Mall and Grenfell Street.

In the south-west of the city area, the huge Adelaide Central Market, between Gouger and Grote Streets, is the largest produce market in the Southern Hemisphere.

All varieties of fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, fish and bakery products can be purchased here.

The East End Markets is situated in trendy Rundle Street every Saturday.

This Adelaide shopping market offers over 70 stalls of high quality merchandise, you’ll find custom designed fashion, shoes and accessories and a lot of handmade arts and crafts.

In the Fisherman's Wharf Market you won’t find any fish but plenty of other goodies can be found here. A view of lovely Port Adelaide. This market has 150 stalls with new, old, and secondhand goods, a little bit of something for everyone.

Great for browsing as they are housed in the historic warehouses along the wharf at Port Adelaide and while you’re here you may as well climb the historic Port Adelaide lighthouse as it's adjacent to the market.

Only open Sundays, the Fisherman’s Wharf Market is on Queens Wharf, Commercial Road, at Port Adelaide.

No tome on shopping in Adelaide would be complete without some mention of Adelaide's Original Open Market

This is an old fashioned, open air flea market that operates on the first and third Sunday of every month at Christies Beach, a thirty minute drive from Adelaide on the beautiful Fleurieu Peninsula.

It is a craft market as well as a genuine trash and treasure second hand market and has been operating since 1982.

You’ll find the Original Open Market at The Reserve, Beach Road, at Christies Beach.

Here’s a list of the more notable Adelaide shopping centres in and around the city..........enjoy,

John.
